Jot+ Notes is designed for Microsoft Windows, and will not run natively on Linux/Unix or MacOS platforms. But there is is a way to install and use Jot+ Notes on these platforms, though it will likely require a little technical knowledge to get it working.
The WINE Project is an open-source platform for running Microsoft Windows applications under Linux and other Unix-type operating systems (including MacOS!).
King Stairs Software does not support using Jot+ Notes with Wine, or on any non-Windows platform. Use of these instructions is entirely at your own risk and technical support will not be provided.
An earlier edition of this article used Jot+ Notes 3.4.3 and Ubuntu Linux 8.04; this edition was tested with Jot+ Notes 3.8.0 and Ubuntu 17.10 (current releases) with Wine 2.0.3.
As a rule, you may need the most current stable versions of all three (Jot+ Notes, Linux and Wine) for best results.
The instructions here will use Ubuntu 17.10; for other Linux platforms and MacOS you will need to refer to the Wine Wiki for detailed help.
You can find detailed instructions for installing Wine on Ubuntu (and Linux Mint) on the Wine Wiki. Note that installing Wine will likely require some Linux knowledge (though more user-friendly installers are under development).
We recommend using the stable version of Wine – development versions are not tested.
To install Jot+ Notes under Wine, you need to make the Jot+ Notes setup available to Linux (e.g. copy JotNotes-setup.exe to your home folder). Then you just launch the setup and follow the instruction just as you do under Windows.
On completion you should see a Jot+ Notes icon on your Ubuntu desktop which you can double-click to launch Jot+ Notes. On Linux. Cool or what?
A couple of screenshots of Jot+ Notes 3.8.0 running on Ubuntu Linux:
Because Jot+ Notes is a Windows application, and because Wine does not emulate a Windows environment 100%, there will be glitches and problems. Some will be Wine issues (e.g. Windows API’s that are not fully implemented), others may be Jot+ Notes issues.
These are a few of the things we are aware of:
- Jot+ Notes plugins may not work under Wine, especially ones that use advanced RichEdit interfaces. Plugins will load, but affected commands will not enable or do anything.
- Windows and Linux normally have different fonts installed, which will probably cause problems, though you can install your Windows fonts into Wine. See the WineTricks link below for help with this.
- You may receive errors with Print Preview.
- Jot+ Notefiles (.jot files) are not “associated” with Jot+ Notes – you cannot double-click one to launch it in Jot+ Notes.
The above list is almost certainly incomplete.
It is worth mentioning that Wine is actively developed and regularly updated, so any of these issues may be resolved by the time you read this.
